Winter might bring chillier weather but in Manly, there’s a reason our locals love it. The summer crowds have eased, the pace is slower but the ocean is just as inviting.
For some, it’s the perfect time to stay rugged up and explore the coastal walks by foot, bike or boat. For others, winter is when the ocean really shines – with some of the clearest water of the year and so much to discover below the surface, making it ideal for snorkelling and diving.

Whale watching season is here

From May until November, humpback whales make their way along the coast for their yearly migration to warmer birthing waters in Queensland – and Manly’s vantage points give you a front row seat. Whether you’re watching from headlands like Fairfax Lookout at North Head or joining a boat tour like the one offered by Ocean Extreme from Manly Wharf, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Hit the coastal walks

From Manly to Shelly Beach, Queenscliff to Freshwater, Manly to Spit or even the full length of the Bondi to Manly and beyond, there’s no shortage of scenic walks to stretch your legs. The cooler temperatures makes walking a breeze – you can watch waves roll in, spot migrating whales and take in the beauty of our headlands and beaches.

Explore below the surface

For those brave enough to dip beneath the surface, winter is one of the best times of year to snorkel and dive around Manly. The water is at its clearest and in the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve you might be lucky enough to see an incredible natural spectacle – the cuttlefish mating season. These colour-shifting creatures put on an extraordinary display, making it a must-see for underwater explorers. If you want to hit the best spots, jump on a tour with the guides from EcoTreasures.

Kayak in calm

With glassy water conditions, winter is a beautiful time to paddle. Launch from West Esplanade (west of Manly Wharf) with Manly Kayak Adventures or join a guided tour to explore the coastline from a whole new perspective. Pack some snacks and have a picnic at Store Beach or make your way to the Q Station where you can warm up with a coffee and pastry.

Jump on a bike!

Hop on 2 wheels with Manly Bikes and explore Manly village from the wharf and along the Corso to the beach, ride along further to Queenscliff Beach or cruise up to North Head. It’s a relaxed and scenic way to see everything Manly has to offer – and remember to stop in at a local café for a hot drink to take in the views as you go.

Whether you’re staying dry and soaking up the salty sea breeze or diving beneath the surface to discover what’s hiding below – winter is the best time to explore Manly.
