Something is Happening(s)

For this solo presentation, Abby Murray brings together her distinct and richly complex practice of figurative painting, sloppy craft, performative letter writing and iterative installation to highlight the influence of the past as present in an intense, temporal engagement with feminist storytelling.

Themed around non-linear visions of a re-imagined relationship with the void of her grandmother’s memory, Murray draws from the visual language of the American Women’s Art Movement (1960s-present) that her grandmother, Arletta Abbey, helped champion.

Permeated by recurring themes and images sourced from the fragmented archives she inherited from her grandmother, Murray transforms the gallery space into a backdrop of an unspecified play, continuously and repetitively hinting that something may happen, has happened or is happening.

Autobiographical paintings and re-imagined textiles collide in space to appear as theatre curtains with each element of the works gesturing towards the feminist and queer histories these disciplines emerged from. Part theatre stage, part embodied making, Something is Happening(s) brings together the ouvure of Murray’s practice to re-imagine and re-map the past, endlessly re-repeating and re-developing both the failures of her own practice and that of feminists’ histories.
