Barrenjoey Headland Walk

Just an hour’s drive north of Manly, Barrenjoey Headland at Palm Beach offers one of Sydney’s most rewarding coastal walks. Topped by the historic Barrenjoey Lighthouse, this iconic headland is a stunning blend of rugged sandstone cliffs, native bushland, and panoramic ocean views — perfect for a half-day escape into nature.

The walk begins at the base of Barrenjoey Headland, where you’ll choose between two scenic routes to the summit: the Access Trail, a gradual 1km incline suitable for most fitness levels, or the shorter but steeper Smugglers Track, which rewards walkers with sweeping views across Palm Beach and Pittwater. Either route takes around 15–20 minutes each way, and both are well-maintained with clear signage.

At the top, the views are spectacular. You’ll find yourself surrounded by uninterrupted 360-degree vistas — to the east, the Pacific Ocean stretches endlessly; to the west, the calm waters of Pittwater meet the forested hills of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It’s an ideal spot for photography, picnicking, or simply soaking in the natural beauty.

The headland is also rich in history and ecology. Along the way, interpretive signs share stories of the lighthouse keepers, Indigenous heritage, and local wildlife. Keep an eye out for sea eagles overhead and whales offshore during migration season (May–November).

For an even more memorable experience, time your visit for sunrise or sunset — or return at night to stargaze from one of the darkest skies near Sydney, as Barrenjoey Headland is part of an official Urban Night Sky Place.

Whether you’re a casual walker, a keen hiker, or a history buff, the Barrenjoey Headland Walk is a must-do coastal adventure just beyond Manly.
