Are you looking for a new outdoor hobby that will take you out onto the calm waters of Sydney, increase your general fitness, especially your core strength?  Why not rent a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), slap on the sun cream, a hat and wetsuit if the weather or wind is cool enough, and head out for a paddle. A SUP is more stable than a surfboard and is a popular sport for any age or fitness level.   Here are some of the best spots to stand-up paddleboard on the Northern Beaches.

Manly Cove

If you SUP around Manly Cove, you will be paddling amongst moored yachts with the option of discovering some of the local hidden beaches. Our favourite is Store Beach, a short paddle from the Wharf and only accessible via water. If this is your first time on a SUP, Manly Kayak Centre offer private lessons.  They have also created a new sport called, SUPBALL, a mix of netball, water polo, lacrosse and rugby played on board a SUP. SUPBALL is a great activity for your next birthday party, buck/hens or even corporate team-building day.

Shelly Beach is a great spot to SUP because of the calm and protected waters, which are generally less busy than neighbouring Manly Beach. Make sure you bring your mask and snorkel so you can jump off and explore the waters of Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve where you may be lucky enough to spot a friendly blue grouper, turtle or giant cuttlefish.

After your paddle make sure you visit one of the nearby eateries or bars for a post paddle refuel.

The Basin is located in Ku-ring-gai National Park on the pristine waters of Pittwater. It is only accessible via a ferry from Palm Beach; you will need to check the ferry times when planning your expedition.  It is famous for its wildlife, turquoise waters and is a popular camping spot.  At the Basin, you will find a sheltered lagoon, protected from waves, wind and boats, which makes it a great place to SUP. If you are lucky, you may spot a wallaby or kangaroo hopping past.

Clareville Beach

Stand up paddle board in Clareville

Clareville is a west-facing beach located on the tranquil waters of Pittwater. The beach is protected from the wind, which makes it an enjoyable spot to Stand Up Paddle-board on the Northern Beaches.  Make sure you stop by Avalon SUP who offer tours, hire and even SUP yoga. If you are up for a thrilling adventure, book yourself on one of their twilight tours. The bottom of your board is fitted with LED lights that will light up the water as you paddle.
