Hit the trail in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is a beautiful, unspoilt and expansive park situated in the northern Sydney region roughly 25km from the CBD.
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in this natural paradise is by embarking on one of its captivating walks. Here are five stunning walking tracks that will not disappoint.
West Head Army Track
West Head is situated on the northern point of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, making it the perfect place to appreciate impressive views of Palm Beach, Pittwater and Broken Bay.
While it is only short walk at 1km return, the Army Track is exciting at every turn, winding down the spur of West Head and ending with a dose of history with WWII battlements.
This hike is easy to access from parking in West Head, but the walk itself is challenging and requires the use of a ladder, so only attempt it with a reasonable level of fitness and agility. But once you reach the bottom, the hard work pays off!

Difficulty: Grade 4 – rough and steep in sections with a ladder climb
Elvina Trail
Immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the Elvina Bay Circuit, a picturesque bushwalk offering a delightful mix of highlights, including a refreshing swimming hole, cascading waterfalls and captivating vistas of Pittwater.
Choose your adventure by either taking a ferry from Church Point to Elvina Bay or driving to West Head and descending from there. Along the way, keep a keen eye out for the park’s diverse wildlife, such as swamp wallabies, lace monitors, glossy black cockatoos, wattlebirds, honeyeaters and the majestic white-bellied sea eagles. Embark on the Elvina Bay Circuit and let nature’s charm embrace you.

The Basin Track
The Basin Track offers visitors a delightful and accessible experience in nature, taking you through a diverse landscape including coastal heathland and peaceful forested areas.
The conditions along the Basin Track are generally moderate, with a combination of compacted gravel and natural terrain, and some gentle inclines, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
This walk also includes the Mackerel Track, which presents as a fork in the track at around the 1km mark – turn right to continue on the Basin Track, turn left to explore the Mackerel Track.
Along the Basin Track, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of Pittwater and the surrounding bushland. The track leads to the picturesque Basin picnic area, where you can relax, have a picnic or take a dip in the calm waters.
Keep an eye out for native wildlife along the way, such as wallabies, birds and perhaps even a glimpse of the resident goannas. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the natural beauty.
To access the Basin Track, start from West Head Road and follow the signposted trail. It is recommended you wear comfortable walking shoes, carry drinking water and be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Resolute Track

At 3.7km in length, the Resolute Track is a relatively short walk, although it can be tough and so requires some bushwalking experience.
This track features some sections with steep inclines and uneven terrain, so it’s advisable to wear sturdy walking shoes and be prepared for occasional rocky patches. Also keep in mind that the trail forks – make sure you turn left at this point to remain on the Resolute Track.
At the base of the Resolute Track, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Pittwater and Barrenjoey Lighthouse in Palm Beach.
The track eventually leads to Resolute Beach, a picturesque spot where you can relax, soak up the sun and take in the tranquil surroundings. You may even catch a glimpse of the resident wallabies that occasionally frequent the area.
To access Resolute Track, start from West Head Road and follow the signposted trail.

Difficulty: Grade 4 – steep and uneven in sections
Towlers Bay Trail

If you’re up for something a bit longer, look no further than Towlers Bay Trail. Taking around 3-4 hours, this track is known for its accessibility and is suitable for most fitness levels. It presents a moderate-level walk, with varying terrain that includes downhill sections as you make your way towards the coast at Elvina Bay.
