Camping on the Northern Beaches
Are you looking for a camping getaway only a short way distance from the hustle and bustle of the Sydney CBD?
The Northern Beaches has some amazing spots to escape to with your other half or a bunch of mates. Pitch your tent close to the ocean at one of the several hidden gems. Sit back and relax while enjoying a quiet beer or two, or put up the hammock and catch up on all those books you didn’t get a chance to read during the year.
Here are some places worth checking out, all located within easy driving distance of Sydney.
The Basin
The Basin campground is the only place you can camp in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and has a large grassy area overlooking Pittwater. Here you will find fantastic facilities such as a sheltered beach, an inland lagoon and picnic areas with electric barbeques. If you visit outside peak periods, you will be able to spot goannas, kookaburras and even wallabies hopping around the campsite.
During the cooler months, you can rent out a fire pit and toast a marshmallow or two. Don’t forget your walking shoes, there are some fantastic walks in the area. The Basin track is a favourite, where you can see some aboriginal engravings.
The easiest way to get to The Basin Campground is by jumping on a ferry from Palm Beach. Another option is to park your car at West Head Road and walk the steep 2.8km walk down to the campground.
NRMA Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park
NRMA Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park in Narrabeen is the one of the only beachfront caravan and camping locations in Sydney. It is ideally situated in a unique location only metres from both the beach and the calm waters of Narrabeen Lagoon. If you prefer the glamping part of camping (especially during the cooler months), they also have villas and cabins with heating.
Narrabeen is a wonderful place to stay for both a beach holiday or as a base for exploring Sydney and the city surrounds. There are plenty of fantastic cafés and restaurants nearby, if you feel like a break from cooking!
There is a boat ramp with direct access to the lagoon and ocean, so make sure you pack some basic fishing gear. A waterpark and playground will keep your kids occupied all year around.
Narrabeen Lagoon and its surrounding beaches are a true urban fishing gem, with fantastic fishing available only a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Sydney. For anyone holidaying at NRMA Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park, it is definitely worth packing some basic fishing gear. You can find fantastic walks nearby, such as the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail, a wonderful and accessible walk exploring the stunning bushland and lagoon views. This trail can be used by everyone- walkers, runners, cyclists, kids and people in wheelchairs. Another popular walk is the Turrimetta walk, where you follow the bush path around the headland to Warriewood Beach.
