If you’re looking for a camping getaway within easy reach of Sydney’s CBD, the Northern Beaches has the answer.

Pitch your tent close to the water, sit back and relax while enjoying a quiet beer. Or put up a hammock and catch up on all those books you didn’t get a chance to read during the year.

The Basin campground is the only place you can camp in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It has a large grassy area overlooking Pittwater, and fantastic facilities such as a sheltered beach, an inland lagoon and picnic areas with electric barbeques. If you visit outside peak periods you’ll spot goannas, kookaburras and even wallabies hopping around the campsite.

During the cooler months, rent one of the fire pits and toast marshmallows while sharing fireside stories.

Don’t forget your walking shoes and make the most of the fantastic hiking trails in the area. The Basin track is a favourite, featuring Aboriginal engravings.

The easiest way to get to The Basin campground is on a ferry from Palm Beach. Another option is to park your car at West Head Road and walk the steep 2.8km walk down to the campground.

NRMA Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park in Narrabeen is the one of the only beachfront caravan and camping locations in Sydney.

It is ideally situated only metres from both the beach and the calm waters of Narrabeen Lagoon. It is the perfect location for both a beach holiday or as a base for exploring Sydney.

A waterpark and playground will keep the kids occupied, while the nearby boat ramp provides direct access to the lagoon and ocean, so make sure you pack some fishing gear. Nearby you’ll find plenty of fantastic cafés and restaurants if you feel like a break from cooking.

If you prefer glamping rather than camping, especially during the cooler months, the park also has villas and cabins with heating.

Narrabeen also has access to fantastic walks, such as  Narrabeen Lagoon Trail, and Turrimetta Headland Walk, taking you around the headland to Warriewood Beach.
