MANLY WHARF’S LITTLE PENGUINS

Manly is the home to some of the cutest creatures in the world – little penguins! They’re the only mainland breeding colony in NSW and are pretty iconic in the local Manly area, living at Manly Wharf.  Reports of Manly’s little secret have existed from around the 1940s and ’50s. These furry friends tend to nest every night between July and February.

While there are plenty of Little Penguins living in Australia and New Zealand, Manly’s population is endangered and protected under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. Manly’s Little Penguin population once numbered in the hundreds, but has decreased to around 60 breeding pairs.

If you do want to visit the penguins, they generally return to their burrows at sunset. Don’t use flash photography as it disorientates them. Or if you can’t see penguins in the wild, visit some at Manly SEALIFE SanctuarySEALIFE Sydney Aquarium and Taronga Zoo.

You can read more about protecting Manly’s little penguins here. There are Volunteer Penguin Wardens around every night patrolling the area, ensuring the penguins can breed in safety and educating the public. You can contact National Parks and Wildlife Service on (02) 9960 6266 for more information on becoming a warden.
