Manly Art Gallery & Museum is delighted to be able to present the Days of Summer woodblock print series and recent watercolour paintings by renowned Australian artist Salvatore Zofrea, who lives in the Manly region.

Inspired by the natural landscapes in Kurrajong near the Blue Mountains and North Head Manly, Salvatore Zofrea’s woodcut prints and watercolour paintings offer a fresh look at Australia’s idyllic rural landscape free from the presence of human interference. The woodcuts display an array of natural wonders found in the bush in all their glory. This includes the red waratah, golden wattle, Christmas bells, bottle brush, flannel flower and grevillea as well as birds such as kookaburras, bell birds, magpies and bronze pigeons. The nature of these works are moving in their beauty and much of their subject matter can be found scattered across the gardens, parks and reserves of the towns and cities in Australia.

Days of Summer teleports the visitor back to those warm summer days spent outside with the company of the Australian landscape. The exhibition provides an opportunity for reflection on our contemporary lifestyles. Are we spending enough time connecting with and appreciating these wonders? Are our lifestyle choices detrimental to the survival of our native plants and wildlife?

The Gallery owns fifteen artworks by Zofrea which includes the major paintings Psalm 64 - Midnight minuet, 1997, and Psalm 90 - Self portrait of a life, 1999, which was donated by the artist. This work, Study for Psalm 37, is part of The Psalm series in which the artist reinterprets the spiritual ‘songs’, adapting them to contemporary events and the artist’s own experiences. He explores the tension between the spiritual and the worldly desires that make up our lives. In his work, Zofrea continuously draws on the traditions of European art and the Renaissance period through his techniques and ecclesiastical subject matter. This contrasts with his prints and paintings of the Australian flora and landscape which are expressive and full of movement.
